Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

On the romantic road to Rothenburg ob der tauber
The Romantic road is the old highway that connected the walled cities in the heart of Germany. I do have to confess, I took the autobahn most of the way instead. I thought the German beer would be the highlight of the trip for me. No complaints on the beer but it is quite an experience to drive through the beautiful German countryside with the top down on the autobahn. The autobahn is remarkably efficient and the flow of traffic runs about 140 kph. I have discovered our vehicle runs incredibly smooth at 200kph (120 mph)and is now where near topped out. It will be tomorrow.

This Sign means, ” no posted speed limit”– go as fast as you can
The Autobahn
Autobahn terms I have learned:
Fahrt- journey or trip
Ausfahrt- exit. Root of this word means you will **** your pants(or at least ****) if you forget to slow down.
Schneller- faster get the hell out of here
Tankstelle- a gas station or place that will take all if your euros
Wir haben uns – we are lost. This can happen when you enter the wrong rothenburg into your gps
Dreieck- a fork in the road
Fubganger- pedestrian
Rothenburg is a city along the romantic road that runs from Frankfurt to Munich. The walled city was founded in 960 AD and is packed full of medieval charm. Parking is extremely limited inside the city and cars are only allowed in by permit. Our hotel has a parking lot and we reluctantly drove into the city on a narrow cobblestone road into a mass of tourist who acted like they we seeing a car for the first time and were in no hurry to get out of our way. Once the car was parked we were fubgangers for the rest of our stay.

We walked to the main town square and recognized the night watchman walking down the street. he gives a nightly tour of the city and we signed up to go with him this evening.

Melissa quickly found the Katherine Wohlfahrt’s Christmas store. I figured out that this would be a lengthy and quite possibly an expensive experience. Knowing this, I excused myself to visit the closest beer garden where I could wait it out. That is where am writing this now.
After meeting back up we found an authentic Italian restaurant where we ate some pizza and I drank some beer. After roaming the streets for a while among the masses we found a little coffee shop named Cafe Wunderbar. Here we had a chance to video chat with the kids. We were sitting on the sidewalk patio and people from this town were surprised to see how we were using the one wifi connection available in town. It was like watching all the people in the background on the Today Show.
At 8pm we met in the market square along with about 60 others to go on the night watchman’s tour. Our guide was hysterical and we enjoyed his 1 hour tour of the city. I will upload his funny 3 minute opening monologue. Dinner was pork knuckles and sauerkraut.
