Memorial Day Weekend 2010

God has blessed us with good friends. I have been told the best friends you make in your life are the parents of your children’s friends. I wish I could take credit for that saying.. and knowing me, I probably will one day soon. But I really believe that it is true.
We spent time at Canyon Lake camping at Potter’s creek campsite. Canyon Lake is 3/4 of the way to San Antonio from Austin or around 60 miles from our home. The lake is beautiful with lots of interesting hills jetting up around the area and beautiful blue water. Army Corp of Engineers created and still runs the Lake. Based on our interactions with the current staff, I was left with the impresion the corp is running short on talent these days.
We arived at 4:00 only slightly delayed by the directions that Google and Jack Kendall had prepared for us. Luckily, we were the first of the group to arrive. Apparently, we had been the hot topic of conversation between the staff before we arrived. The reservations were for Friday to Monday and were paid in advance. We were arriving on Saturday and even had called to make them aware of the late arrival. The staff wanted to upset someone at arrival for showing up a day late. They soon found out that they chose poorly. After being threatened with loss of campsite or being turned away altogether, I was happy to tell them that my family would be happy to camp right there with them at the Ranger’s station. After driving on 27 different county roads to get here, there was to be no turning back. Somehow, using their Hillbilly logic, we solved the problem by agreeing to two seperate debit charges of $8 each. I think this was our penalty for paying for a night of campsite and not actually putting up a tent. I can’t wait to see our statement. I won’t be surprised if we actually bought lottery tickets or an adult video for our ungracious hosts. At the time I did not care, the whole exercise took 45 minutes and caused quite a backup at the front entry gate.
Nevertheless, having gained entry into the park, we proceeded to the campsite and began to unload and set up our tent. The Kendall’s and the Bretsch’s were less than an hour behind and we did our best to make things right at our new temporary home in anticiption for the fun we were about to have.
Before we knew it, they had arrived and we spent the night enjoying good company and frosty cold beverages, brisket, sausage wraps, and fresh corn on the cob.
